CHAPTER 12

Xandro

I wait eagerly for Lydia to return inside.

“I’m afraid Rosa does not wish to see you,” Lydia says softly.

My expression turns somber, and disappointment and frustration fill me. My emotions begin to simmer, and a touch of anger starts to well up within me.

However, I try to remain composed as I say, “Lydia, I appreciate your efforts in reaching out to Rosa, but I can't deny my growing frustration. It seems like my journey to find love has hit another dead end, and I can't help but feel let down.”

“Xandro, I understand that you're disappointed, but please remember that Rosa's decision was her own. It's important to respect her choice and her beliefs about love. You two did talk, and—”

“I know,” Lydia,” I say, my voice tinged with frustration, “but it's hard not to feel frustrated. I had hoped that maybe, just maybe, Rosa would see something in me, something that could change her perspective, but it seems my efforts have been in vain.”

Lydia’s eyes flash. “You thought Rosa would come to love you if you two talk more?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you love her?”

“I don’t know, but I…” I grit my teeth and glance at Grax.

He’s eyeing the door as if he wishes to leave.

“I understand your disappointment, Xandro,” Lydia says, “but love is a complex and unpredictable journey. Not every connection will lead to a romantic outcome. It doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with you or Rosa.”

I grit my teeth and sigh, trying to regain my composure. “You're right, Lydia. I know it's not Rosa's fault, nor is it yours. It's just... love can be such an elusive and confusing thing. I had hoped that maybe your matchmaking efforts would lead me to something extraordinary like they did for Grax and others. It was like a push of a button! Who is going to push my button?"

Lydia crosses her arms. I half expect her to talk about her button.

Instead, she merely says, “Xandro, please don't lose hope. Love may take time, and sometimes, the path is winding and filled with unexpected turns. Unlike Rosa, I believe that there's someone out there who will appreciate you for who you are. It's just a matter of time and perseverance. You’ll find her if you haven’t already yet.”

I nod, but I don’t know if I feel more resigned or determined. “You're right, Lydia. I shouldn't let this setback discourage me. I'll keep searching and keep opening myself up to new possibilities. Love will find its way to me eventually.”

“That's the spirit, Xandro. Don't let one disappointment overshadow the potential for something beautiful. Your journey isn't over yet, and who knows what lies ahead.”

I glance at Grax, wishing he would say something, but he doesn’t.

Silence descends on us, and I feel suffocated. My frustrations mount.

“Grax, would you mind giving us a moment alone? There's something I need to discuss with Lydia.”

“Of course. Amy is waiting for me anyhow. Good talk, my friends. I will see you later.”

“Take care,” Lydia murmurs to him.
